Introduction: Isolation and Supervision of System Water Supply
Control Valves are essential components of fire suppression systems, used to isolate sections of the piping for maintenance, testing, or repair. Most importantly, they act as the gatekeeper for the entire system's water supply. NFPA standards strictly mandate that these valves must be constantly supervised to ensure they are always in the open position, guaranteeing water is available when a fire occurs.
We supply the two most common types: the Outside Stem and Yoke (OS&Y) Gate Valve and the Supervised Butterfly Valve. The OS&Y valve visually indicates its position by the height of its stem—if the stem is up, the valve is open. The Butterfly valve is more compact and uses an electrical tamper switch connected to the Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP) to confirm its open status.
All our control valves are UL Listed and FM Approved, ensuring their pressure integrity and tamper switch reliability meet the most demanding fire safety and insurance requirements. They are available in flanged, grooved, or threaded connections in all standard sizes. (Approx. 520 words)
Advantage: Supervised Reliability and Easy Operation
- Visual Indication (OS&Y): The exposed stem offers a clear, immediate visual check of the valve's status, which is highly valued for simple supervision.
- Tamper Supervision: Both valve types include NFPA-compliant tamper switches that send a "trouble" signal to the FACP if the valve is turned more than a few turns from the open position.
- Fusion-Bonded Epoxy Coating: High-quality internal and external epoxy coating provides excellent long-term corrosion resistance, essential for water supply lines.
- Low Pressure Drop: Gate valves (OS&Y) offer minimal resistance (full port opening) when fully open, ensuring maximum flow efficiency to the system.
- Compact Design: Butterfly valves provide a much smaller footprint and lighter weight solution, ideal for installations in tight spaces like pump rooms or vertical risers.
- Durable Materials: Ductile iron construction ensures the valve body can withstand high system pressures and seismic loading.

Critical Roles in System Isolation and Control
Riser Control Valve
Installed on the main system riser pipe to isolate the entire floor or building system from the primary water source for maintenance.
Sectional Isolation
Used to divide a large system into smaller, manageable zones, allowing part of the system to remain operational during partial maintenance.
Fire Pump Discharge
Heavy-duty, flanged control valves used on the fire pump discharge side to isolate the pump for service and testing.
Testing and Drainage
Smaller control valves used on drain lines, test connections, and inspector's test assemblies.
Fire Hydrant Isolation
OS&Y valves or buried non-rising stem valves used on the water main loop to isolate specific fire hydrants.
