Control Valves (OS&Y/Butterfly)

-- Steady & Reliable Manufacturer --

Introduction: Isolation and Supervision of System Water Supply

Control Valves are essential components of fire suppression systems, used to isolate sections of the piping for maintenance, testing, or repair. Most importantly, they act as the gatekeeper for the entire system's water supply. NFPA standards strictly mandate that these valves must be constantly supervised to ensure they are always in the open position, guaranteeing water is available when a fire occurs.

We supply the two most common types: the Outside Stem and Yoke (OS&Y) Gate Valve and the Supervised Butterfly Valve. The OS&Y valve visually indicates its position by the height of its stem—if the stem is up, the valve is open. The Butterfly valve is more compact and uses an electrical tamper switch connected to the Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP) to confirm its open status.

All our control valves are UL Listed and FM Approved, ensuring their pressure integrity and tamper switch reliability meet the most demanding fire safety and insurance requirements. They are available in flanged, grooved, or threaded connections in all standard sizes. (Approx. 520 words)

Advantage: Supervised Reliability and Easy Operation

  • Visual Indication (OS&Y): The exposed stem offers a clear, immediate visual check of the valve's status, which is highly valued for simple supervision.
  • Tamper Supervision: Both valve types include NFPA-compliant tamper switches that send a "trouble" signal to the FACP if the valve is turned more than a few turns from the open position.
  • Fusion-Bonded Epoxy Coating: High-quality internal and external epoxy coating provides excellent long-term corrosion resistance, essential for water supply lines.
  • Low Pressure Drop: Gate valves (OS&Y) offer minimal resistance (full port opening) when fully open, ensuring maximum flow efficiency to the system.
  • Compact Design: Butterfly valves provide a much smaller footprint and lighter weight solution, ideal for installations in tight spaces like pump rooms or vertical risers.
  • Durable Materials: Ductile iron construction ensures the valve body can withstand high system pressures and seismic loading.

Critical Roles in System Isolation and Control

Riser Control Valve

Installed on the main system riser pipe to isolate the entire floor or building system from the primary water source for maintenance.

Sectional Isolation

Used to divide a large system into smaller, manageable zones, allowing part of the system to remain operational during partial maintenance.

Fire Pump Discharge

Heavy-duty, flanged control valves used on the fire pump discharge side to isolate the pump for service and testing.

Testing and Drainage

Smaller control valves used on drain lines, test connections, and inspector's test assemblies.

Fire Hydrant Isolation

OS&Y valves or buried non-rising stem valves used on the water main loop to isolate specific fire hydrants.

Professional Usage Tips

  1. Tamper Switch Test:

The valve must be turned enough to signal a trouble alarm to the FACP. This test must be performed quarterly or annually, per NFPA 25 requirements.

  2. Full Open Position:

After maintenance, the valve must be opened fully, then typically backed off half a turn, to ensure the gate/disc is completely clear of the waterway and is correctly seated on the tamper switch.

  3. Lubrication:

For OS&Y valves, the stem threads should be periodically cleaned and lubricated (NFPA 25) to ensure smooth operation when required for isolation.

  4. Drain Connection:

Always confirm that the system drain valve downstream of the control valve can fully drain the section of pipe for servicing.

  5. Grooved Coupling Alignment:

When installing grooved control valves, ensure the couplings are correctly aligned and the bolts are torqued evenly to prevent flange distortion or leaks.

FAQ

The tamper switch is a critical supervisory device. It alerts the fire alarm panel if the valve is closed or partially closed, preventing a massive system failure (no water supply) during a fire.

No. Per NFPA 13, all isolation control valves must be supervised (electrically or physically locked) to ensure they remain open, unless they are dedicated test/drain valves.

Butterfly valves are generally maintenance-free. OS&Y valves require periodic lubrication of the stem to prevent seizing and ensure easy operation.

This small valve assembly allows a controlled flow of water equivalent to the discharge of one sprinkler head, used for both drainage and functionally testing the flow switch.

A Butterfly valve always has the valve disc sitting in the center of the waterway, creating a slight obstruction and therefore a higher pressure drop (lower C-factor) than a full-port OS&Y valve.

The position is checked by the tamper switch attached to the valve stem housing, which monitors the rotation of the disc.

Yes, OS&Y valves and Butterfly valves are designed to be installed either horizontally or vertically on the riser pipe.

The MOQ for a standard supervised Butterfly valve is typically 50 units.

AWWA (American Water Works Association) certification indicates the valve is also approved for use on municipal water mains and public supply lines.

Yes, the tamper switch (often NEMA rated) and the yoke assembly for mounting are included with the purchase of the supervised control valve.
