Aluminium threads are more prone to galling than brass or steel during assembly and disassembly. Galling occurs when the oxide film breaks down under pressure and the exposed metal adheres, tearing the thread surface. On an M30×1.5 inlet that may be assembled once at the factory but disassembled at a later hydrostatic test, galling can damage the neck or the valve thread and create a sealing problem that did not exist before.
Aluminium-compatible anti-seize compounds are formulated to interrupt this mechanism and are commonly applied to threaded aluminium components before assembly. A gauge specified for brass valves should not be fitted to an aluminium valve unless the gauge is epoxy-coated or a dielectric separation is provided at the interface.
